Importance of Your Cooling System

A vehicle’s coolant system is a component that many car owners don’t think about until something goes wrong. What owners need to realize is that maintaining your cooling system is an important part of preventative car maintenance. Your coolant system is responsible for absorbing the extra heat in your engine and releasing it into the radiator. Without it, your vehicle would overheat and you’d couldn’t safely drive until it cooled down.

When you run into cooling system problems, it’s best to trust the professionals at Sinister Autoworks in Severn, MD. Our team will be able to provide a thorough analysis of your vehicle’s cooling system and fix the problem! Whether you have a low coolant level or a cracked hose, we’ll have the solutions for it all!

Cooling System 101

Your vehicle’s cooling system is important for, you guessed it, keeping your engine cool. Even in extreme temperatures, your cooling system is able to keep your vehicle operating at a high level. The system disperses a mixture of antifreeze and water throughout your engine and that coolant mixture absorbs any excess heat within the engine. That same mixture is then released into your vehicle’s radiator, which is kept cool by engine fans and the air from when you drive. It has a variety of different fans, pumps, hoses, and belts to help in the dispersion and release of that coolant mixture.

Due to its complex design, it’s recommended that owners take their vehicle to a Sinister Autoworks mechanic when they run into cooling system problems. With that said, there are some things that owners can do themselves to make sure their cooling system is still functioning properly. Here are a couple of our suggestions.

Coolant Level

Though it’s easy to check your coolant level, the method will vary based on if you have a coolant expansion tank or not. If you do, simply remove the cap, check the level, and add the necessary amount of coolant mixture necessary. If you don’t you’ll have to go into your radiator and check it there.

IMPORTANT: make sure that your coolant mixture is a 50/50 mixture of antifreeze and water. Whatever you do, don’t only add water into your cooling system. Water freezes at too high a temperature and the engine reaches temperatures well beyond water’s boiling point to be used alone. The antifreeze reduces the freezing point and increases the boiling point to help maintain quality performance from your cooling system.

Hoses

Your cooling system relies on hoses to disperse the coolant mixture throughout your engine. To check them, open the hood of your car and inspect them for any cracks, splits, bulging, and swelling. You can even squeeze the hose to see how it reacts. If you notice anything wrong, then you need a replacement.

IMPORTANT: when replacing your hose, avoid using a universal hose. Each hose needs to be specific to the make, model, and year of the vehicle. Once the appropriate hose is installed, a pressure test needs to be administered to make sure it’s fitted properly.
